Several allyl ethers are cleanly converted into the corresponding prop-1-enyl ethers on heating in benzene or toluene in the presence of palladium on carbon.

Zur Herstellung von Methacrylsäure acetalisiert man zunächst Isobutyraldehyd, spaltet das erhaltene Acetal zum Isobutenylether und Alkohol, oxidiert den Isobutenylether mit molekularem Sauerstoff oder einem sauerstoffhaltigen Gasgemisch in Gegenwart einer Lauge bei Temperaturen von 30 bis 70 °C zum Epoxid, hydrolysiert dieses Epoxid zum a-Hydroxyisobutyraldehyd, oxidiert diesen anschließend mit konzentrierter oder rauchender Salpetersäure bei Temperaturen von 20 bis 110 °C zur a-Hydroxyisobuttersäure und gewinnt aus dieser durch Wasserabspaltung Methacrylsäure.

Novel compounds of the general formula
in which X represents a hydrogen or a chlorine atom, and each of R', R', R3 and R4 independently represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl or ethyl group, are useful intermediates in the preparation of the corresponding phenols. They may be prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula
in which X has the meaning given above and Ha1 represents a chlorine or fluorine atom, with a compound of the general formula
in which R', R', R3 and R4 have the meanings given above, in the presence of a base.
