Reactions likely to involve C(2)–C(6) and C(2)–C(7) intramolecular reactions in bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane derivatives are discussed in terms of the conformations available to the ringsystem. The reaction of the methyl Schiff base compound 2 with dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) has been reinvestigated in order to determine whether it is initiated through the imine form 2 or the enamine tautomer 3. The structure of the reported 1:1 adduct is reassigned as 6 following elucidation by a combination of NMR techniques including natural abundance gradient enhanced 1H-15N HMBC and 1D HSQC
