Geminal‐dichloromethyl derivatives could be efficiently synthesized by the highly chemoselective platinum on carbon‐catalyzed mono‐dechlorination of trichloromethyl substrates in dimethylacetamide (DMA) as a specific solvent at 25 °C under a hydrogen atmosphere.

Conditions have been developed whereby treatment of 1,1,1-trichloro-2-carbinols with tetrabutylammonium fluoride and cesium fluoride provides 2-fluoro carboxylic acids. The methodology was used to prepare fluoro derivatives of two fatty acids and of the pheromone of the European corn borer.

Chiral syntheses of 2-fluoro carboxylic acids were achieved (ee greater than or equal to 92 %, yield 50-60 %) by stereoselective conversion (with inversion of configuration) of optically active trichloromethyl carbinols to fluoroacids with tetrabutylammonium fluoride. Fluorinated pheromone analogs of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, and of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, were synthesized.

Versatile trichloromethyl carbinols can be prepared in one pot fromprimaryalcohols by treatment with Dess–Martin periodinane (DMP) in CHCl3 followed by introduction of commercially available 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD). A modification of the method was used to convert chiral primaryalcohol (R)-(−)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol to the corresponding trichloromethyl carbinol with
