    The reaction of dimethylaminomethylenemalonaldehyde with Grignard reagents, which proceeds through 1,4-addition and is accompanied by the loss of the dimethylamino group, gives previously unreported (2,2-diformylethenyl)cycloalkanes and alpha,omega-bis-(2,2-diformylethenyl)alkanes, which were characterized as dihydropyran [4 + 2]-cycloadducts with vinyl ethyl ether.

    In this paper we present a simple and efficient two-step procedure for the preparation of triformylmethane from bromoacetic acid and dimethylformamide, synthesis of some triformylmethane derivatives of preparative importance, evidence for an intramolecular hydrogen bond in triformylmethane, based on its 1H-NMR spectra measured in deuterochloroform in the presence of trichloroacetyl isocyanate, and comments on some recent erroneous statements1 concerning the IR spectra of triformylmethane.

    Starting with (R)-1,2-epoxyalkanes, (S)-5-alkyl(or -alkyloxy)-2-[4-(3-fluoroalkyl)phenyl]pyrimidines and (S)-5-(3-fluoroalkyl)-2-(4-alkyloxyphenyl)pyrimidines were synthesized and shown to be good chiral dopants for achieving fast response of ferroelectric liquid crystals mixtures.
