Deprotection of acetals and ketals can be achieved by using sodium tetrakis(3,5-trifluoromethylphenyl)borate (NaBArF 4) as the catalyst in water at 30 °C. For example, a quantitative conversion of 2-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane into benzaldehyde was accomplished within five minutes by using this sodium salt (0.1 mol%) in water.

A General Synthesis of 3,5-Dihalo-2<i>H</i>-1,4-oxazin-2-ones from Cyanohydrins

In a novel approach starting from O-trimethylsilyl protected or unprotected cyanohydrins and oxalyl chloride or bromide, a series of unknown 6-substituted 3,5-dihalo-2H-1,4-oxazin-2-ones were prepared. The method was shown to be efficient for various types of cyanohydrins; however cyclization was not obtained with cyanohydrins containing bulky substituents, electron-rich aryl or heteroaryl groups. A mechanism is proposed.

An organocatalysed and chemoselective one-pot oxa-Michael-cyclocondensation reaction of N-BocNHOH to unsaturated α-ketoesters is reported which affords an original entry to enantioenriched 3-isoxazoline carboxylate derivatives as biorelevant heterocyclic frameworks.
