method for the synthesis of 1- and 2-pyridylazulenes, and of 1,3-dipyridylazulenes, is described. Color and spectral changes of these pyridylazulenes upon the addition of either acid or metal ions were investigated in detail. An efficient and regioselective method for iodination of electron-rich aromaticcompounds was found using N-chlorosuccinimide and sodium iodide in AcOH with short reaction times. This method is also applicable to non-benzenoidaromatic or heteroaromatic compounds.

Very sluggish Sonogashirareactions of electron‐enriched aryl diiodides have been carried out in high yield in an oxygen‐free, two‐chamber reactionsystem. The formation of triethylamine hydroiodide crystals was monitored to determine the completion of reaction.
