    A photographic element containing a temporary barrier layer between reactants and polymeric compositions useful therein are disclosed. The compositions comprise a mixture of (1) from 5 to 95 percent by weight of a polymer comprising from 55 to 85 percent by weight of vinylidene chloride, 5 to 35 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and optionally from 0 to 20 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and (2) from 95 to 5 percent by weight of a polymeric carboxy-ester-lactone. A barrier formed from such composition is particularly useful as a process timing layer in color image transfer photographic elements.

    A photographic element is provided which contains a substituted 1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidinone electron transfer agent. Such electron transfer agent has the following formula: wherein: R is hydrogen or a hydrolyzable moiety; R1 is hydrogen or a hydroxy group; R2, R3 and R4 each represent hydrogen, hydroxy, an alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, a phenyl group, -NHSO2R5, -O(CH2)nOR6, -(CH2)nOR6, -O(CH2)nC6H5, -(CH2)nR7, or -O(CH2)nR7; R5 is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R6 is hydrogen or a methyl group; R7 is NHSO2R5 or SO2NHR5; and n is a positive integer of 1 to 2; with the proviso that at least one of R2, R3 and R4 is a substituent other than hydrogen.

    A photographic element is described which contains a ballasted, bifunctional benzisoxazolone compound of the formula: wherein: R is alkyl or aryl; DEV is a silver halide developing agent; Ball is at least one organic ballasting radical of such molecular size and configuration as to render the compound nondiffusible in the photographic element during development in an alkaline processing composition; and n is a positive integer of 1 to 3. The compound may be employed in a negative-working, color image transfer element to release the developer upon processing. The remainder of the compound functions to scavenge oxidized developer.

    Color-forming para-sulfonamidodiphenylamines and their corresponding sulfonimide dyes are useful in imaging materials. Described is a color-forming dye precursor compound which is a diphenylamine, phenylnaphthylamine or an acid salt thereof comprising a first benzene ring attached by an -NH- group to a second benzene ring or a naphthalene nucleus wherein (a) the first ring has an electron donating group in a meta or para position. (b) the second benzene ring or the naphthalene nucleus has a sulfonamido group in its para position, (c) the compound is free of sulfonamido groups in each of its ortho positions, and (d) is capable, in oxidized form, of forming a sulfonimide dye; all ring positions being relative to the -NH- group. The corresponding sulfonimide dyes are formed by oxida- - tion of the color-forming sulfonamidodiphenylamines by means of a suitable oxidizing agent, such as the oxidized form of a cross-oxidizing silver halide developing agent.
