A triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) compound bearing 3,4,5-tridodecyloxybenzyloxy moieties exhibits a columnar liquid crystalline phase, and by changing its self-assembled structure, is responsive to alkaline metal cations due to cationâphosphine oxide interactions.
