    PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new cyanate ester having high storage stability by itself and affording a plastic having excellent light transmittance and heat resistance, low values of permittivity and dielectric dissipation factor and a high refractive index and resultantly useful in, e.g. applications of optical techniques by using the cyanate ester as a raw material and to provide a method for producing the cyanate ester.

    SOLUTION: The cyanate ester is represented by general formula (I) (wherein, R denotes a fluorenylidene group or a p-biphenylmethylidene group). The cyanate ester is obtained by reacting a bisphenol represented by general formula (II) (wherein, R denotes a fluorenylidene group or a p-biphenylmethylidene group) with a cyanogen halide represented by general formula (III) (wherein, X denotes a halogen atom).
