Termal decomposition of beta-cyanoethyl-N-nitraniine in melt is preceded by protonation of the amino nitrogen atom and is accompanied by evolution of nitrogen(1) oxide with formation of acrylonitrile. Thermal decomposition of bis(beta-cyanoethyl)-N-nitramine under similar conditions follows a radical mechanism with initial dissociation of the N-N bond. The same mechanism is operative in thermal decomposition of both N-nitramines in a dilute dibutyl phthalate solution.

Reaction of secondary amines with the nitrite anion assisted by diacetoxyiodobenzene results in respective N-nitroamines. It is the first example of oxidative nitration of the amino group. N-Nitrosoamines are by-products. The yields and the ratio of the nitration and nitrosation products depend on the nature of the starting amine, cation of the salt used, and the solvent.
