Alcohols are easily converted to their corresponding dialkyl sulfite under mild reaction conditions using Na2SO3/SOCl2 in moderate to good isolated yields.
Synthesis of dialkyl sulphites from alcohols in the halogen–pyridine–sulphur dioxide system. Novel behaviour of alkyl chlorosulphates in the pyridine–sulphur dioxide system
Dialkylsulphites are formed selectively fromalcohols in the halogen–pyridine–sulphurdioxidesystem. The behaviour of alkylchlorosulphates in the pyridine–sulphurdioxidesystem has been investigated and the role of halogenosulphinate ion in this reaction is discussed.
