Convenient syntheses for Cp, Cp*, and related cyclopentadienyl derivatives (4Cp = C5HiPr4; Cp = C5H2tBu31,2,4) of formula [(Ring)2Mo2O5] are described. Compound [Cp2Mo2O5] was produced in good yields by the rapid oxidation of red [CpMoO2]4 with PhIO in CH2Cl2. [Cp*2Mo2O5] was obtained by CH3COOH acidification of aqueous solutions of [Cp*MoO3]Na, the latter being generated in a single step from [Cp*MoCl4]

The hydrolysis of (η5-C5Me5)WMe4 leads to the formation of the two compounds (η5-C5Me5)2W2O2(μ-CH2)2 (6) and (η5-C5Me5)2W2O2(μ-CH2)(μ-O) (9), containing both methylidene and oxo moieties in one molecule. Reaction of molybdenum—molybdenum triple bonded compounds with group VIII peroxo-transition metal complexes
The reaction of (t-butyl-NC)2NiO2 with (C5Me5)2Mo2(CO)4 results in complete decarbonylation with retention of the metal—metal bond and formation of one oxo and one μ-oxo group per molybdenum. The structure has been established from spectral data and a single crystal X-ray study.
