    Disclosed herein are methods of detecting Plasmodium in a subject (for example, presence of Plasmodium parasite) by detecting the presence and/or amount of one or more metabolites in a sample from the subject. In some embodiments, the methods include detecting in the sample one or more metabolites listed in Table 1, Table 2, and/or Tables 5-8. The amount of the one or more metabolites in the sample is compared to the amount of the one or more metabolites in a control and presence of Plasmodium is determined if the amount of the one or more metabolites is different (for example statistically significantly increased or decreased) compared to the control.

    The invention discloses a method of producing a plant secondary metabolite of interest,comprising: (a) cultivating by suspension culture in a suitable nutrient medium plant cells that produce the secondary metabolite; (b) including within the suspension culture an amount of adsorbent and one or more elicitor agents suitable to increase production of the secondary metabolite; (c)recovering the secondary metabolite from the suspension culture. In a preferred emobidment the invention discloses a method of producing a stilbene plant secondary metabolite of interest, comprising: (a) cultivating by suspension culture in a suitable nutrient medium plant cells that produce a stilbene secondary metabolite; (b) including within the suspension culture an amount of adsorbent and one or more elicitor agents suitable to increase production of the stilbene; (c) recovering the stilbene from the suspension culture.

    The complex chemistry underlying the extensive transformations involved in terpene indole alkaloid synthesis makes identification of the biosynthetic genes challenging. The present invention relates to methods for producing a terpene indole alkaloid derivative, comprising the steps of: (1) providing a terpene indole alkaloid; and (2) providing a first enzyme termed "Precondylocarpine Acetate Synthase" (PAS) or a functional variant or homologue thereof; and/or a second enzyme termed "Dehydroprecondylocarpine Acetate Synthase" (DPAS) or a functional variant or homologue thereof, and optionally providing further identified enzymes involved in this pathway. The invention also encompasses related kits, enzymes, expression vectors, host cells and plants.
