(CF3SO3)2 shows thermochromism (violet → yellow) due to an octahedral → square-planar transformation, whereas cis-[Ni(mpn)2(H2O)2](CF3SO3)2 first shows thermochromism, like the pn complex and then, upon further heating, undergoes phase transitions due to conformational changes of the diamine chelate rings. However, trans-[Ni(dmpd)2(H2O)2](CF3SO3)2 shows a two-step thermochromism, violet → blue → yellow
