1–10 are the most highly hydroxylated secosteroids isolated so far, and are the first hydroxylated at C-4. NaBH4 reduction of the carbonyl group at C-9 of 1 and 2 is stereospecific, producing the heptahydroxylated secosteroids 1a and 2b with a β C-9 hydroxyl group. Compounds 1 and 2 have been found to strongly inhibit the release of histamine fromrat mastocysts.
