Disclosed is a squarilium compound represented by the following general formula (I) (wherein R1 and R2 may be the same or different and respectively represent a hydrogen atom, an optionally substituted alkyl group, an optionally substituted aryl group or the like; R3, R4, R5 and R6 may be the same or different and respectively represent a hydrogen atom, an optionally substituted alkyl group, an optionally substituted alkoxyl group or the like; X represents a nitrogen atom or an oxygen atom; and A represents an acidic group). Also disclosed is a photoelectric conversion material or the like which contains such a squarilium compound and a semiconductor.
Molecular Design and Photovoltaic Performance of Organic Dyes Containing Phenothiazine for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

We synthesized novel organic photosensitizers based on fluorine-substituted phenothiazine with thiophene bridge units in the chromophore for application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Furthermore, organic dyes with different acceptors exhibited higher molar extinction coefficients, and better light absorption at longer wavelengths. The photovoltaic properties of organic dyes composed of different acceptors in their chromophores were measured to identify their effects on the DSSC performance. The organic dye, PFSCN2 containing multi-cyanoacrylic acid as the electron acceptor, showed a power conversion efficiency of 4.67% under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW/cm2). The retarded recombination kinetics from TiO2 electrode to electrolyte enhanced the electron life time of the organic dye, PFSCN2 in the photoanode of the DSSC. This was confirmed with impedance analysis.

Three types of carbazole-based organic dyes with different electron anchoring/acceptors were designed and synthesized as the sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these dyes were investigated and their performance as sensitizers in DSSCs was measured. These dyes share the same donor (N-hexylphenylcarbazole) and π-spacer (thiophene) but differ in the acceptor/anchoring groups incorporated, such as 2-cyanoacetic acid, rhodanine-3-acetic acid or 5-oxo-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-3-carboxylic acid, to configure the novel double branched A-π-D-π-A framework. The dye with the cyanoacetic acid electron acceptor exhibited the highest solar-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency of 3.9% (short-circuit photocurrent density J SC = 95.3 A m−2, open-circuit photovoltage V OC = 0.62 V, and fill factor FF = 0.66) under AM 1.5 G solar irradiation.
