α-Benzylthiocinnamic acid (m.p. 115–123°) was prepared in several ways from benzylthioacetic acid and benzaldehyde or from α-mercaptocinnamic acid and benzylchloride. It was shown that the large m.p. interval depended on polymorphy. By recrystallisation from hot benzene the acid with m.p. 123° was obtained. α-Benzylthiocinnamic add was reduced to α-benzylthiohydrocinnamic acid (m.p. 65°). 3-Benzylthiocoumarin
