    To explore the effect of terminal groups of tripodal ligands on the photoluminescence behaviors of the complexes, lanthanide (Eu(III), Tb(III)) nitrate complexes with two flexible amide-type tripodal ligands, 2,2′,2′′-nitrilotris-(N-phenylmethyl)-acetamide (LI) and 2,2′,2′′-nitrilotris-(N-naphthalenemethyl)-acetamide (LII) were synthesized and characterized. The general formulas of the complexes are [EuLI2(C3H6O)]·(NO3)3·(HCCl3)·(H2O)4 (1), TbLI2(NO3)3·2H2O (2), EuLII(NO3)3 (3), and TbLII(NO3)3 (4). Among them, 1, 3, and 4 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 demonstrates a 1 : 2 (ML2) capsule type stoichiometry, and the complexes 3 and 4 confirm 1 : 1 (ML) type coordination structures. What is more, the triplet energy levels of LI and LII are 24 331 and 19 802 cm−1, which were determined from the phosphorescence spectra of the Gd(III) complexes. Ligand modification by changing the terminal groups alters their triplet energy, and results in a different sensitizing ability towards lanthanide ions. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations of energy levels including HOMO, LUMO, singlet, and triplet energies tuned by the different terminal groups are also discussed in detail, and the trends are almost consistent with the experimental conclusions.

  • Four-, six- and eight-coordinated lead(II) complexes with amine- or amide-type tripodal ligands

    Three novel lead(II) complexes, [Pb(L-1)](ClO4)(2) (1) (L-1 = tris(2-benzylaminoethyl)amine), [Pb(L-2)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2) (L-2 = tris(4-phenyl-3-aza-2-oxobutyl)amine) and [Pb-2(L-3)(2)](ClO4)(4) (3) (L-3 = tris[3-aza-2-oxo-4-(2-pyridyl)butyl]amine) were synthesized and structurally characterized. All three complexes show different stoichiometries as well as coordination numbers of four in 1, eight in 2 and six in 3, respectively. Complex 1 displays a typical tripodal-type 1:1 (M:L) structure and 2 shows a sandwich-type 1:2 structure. The octa-dentate lead(II) ion in 2 is at the center of a dicapped trigonal prism. Complex 3 is revealed as a unique dinuclear 2:2 complex, in which two hexa-dentate lead(II) ions are linked by two carbonyl mu-O atoms forming a Pb-2(mu-O)(2) parallelogram-type moiety.     Solid complexes of lanthanide isothiocyanates with an amide-type tripodal ligand, 2,2',2 ''-nitrilotris-(N-phenylmethyl)-acetamide (L) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectra and molar conductivity measurements. At the same time, the luminescent properties of the Sm(III), Eu(III), Tb(III), Dy(III) isothiocyanate complexes in solid state and the Tb(III) complex in solvents were also investigated.     Solid complexes of lanthanide picrates with a new amide type tripodal ligand, 2,2',2"-nitrilotris-(N-phenylmethyl)-acetamide (L) have been prepared. The X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis indicates that the ML2 type complexes [PrL2(Pic)]Pic)(2) and [NdL2(Pic)])Pic)(2) are isomorphous. And the ML2 complex units are hydrogen bonded to give infinite one-dimensional zigzag supra-molecular chains which are further linked by the interchain hydrogen bonds and pi-pi interactions of the picrate groups to form two-dimensional layer.
