The total synthesis of racemic 14-epiupial (3) is described. The preparation of 3 is achieved in 23 steps starting from 8. In the key step, manganese(III) acetate acts on the monocarboxylic acid derived from 17b to promote concurrent formation of the bicyclic[3,3.1]nonane and lactone rings required for the upial framework.
