The combination of ring-closing metathesis (RCM) followed by an intramolecular Pauson–Khandreaction gives direct entry to tricyclic compounds. The RCM was carried out on a hexacarbonylcobalt-complexed alkyne, this complex acting as a protecting group against enyne metathesis. The procedure was studied for dienynes containing heteroatoms and allows the building of [6,5,5] and [7,5,5] tricyclic systems

An immobilised whole cell Rhodococcus sp. (SP 361) has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the stereoselective hydrolysis of both racemic and prochiral nitrile containing compounds. 2-Alkyl-arylacetonitriles 6a-8a were hydrolysed to (S)-acids and (R)-amides whereas the closely related substrate 9a gave the (R)-acid. A series of prochiral dinitriles 10a-13a were hydrolysed to the corresponding (S)-acids with e.e.'s 22-84%. Models to account for the stereoselectivity of the enzymic hydrolyses have been proposed.

Ketones or ketals were readily converted into the corresponding gem-dihydroperoxides in high yields by treatment with ethereal H2O2 at ambient temperature in the presence of 2-5 mol % of phosphomolybdic acid.
