Abstract The reaction rate of Knoevenagel condensation can be dramatically enhanced by irradiating the reaction mixture containing ethylcyanoacetate, an aldehyde, P2O5, piperidine, and chlorobenzene with a commercial microwave oven. A number of Knoevenagel condensation products were prepared in good yields in very short reaction times (2-15min) under the microwave irradiation.
Recyclable Ni-nanoparticles provides an efficient, economic and rapid method for catalyzing Knoevenagel condensation of aldehydes with an active methylene compound at room temperature. The method offers high yield preferably in case of aromatic aldehydes and proceed well in neutral medium. This method provides a wide range of substrate applicability and simple workup procedure. The products need no further purification and the process is environmentally benign. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
