An efficient per-O-acetylation of carbohydrate derivatives and unprotected reducing sugars promoted by imidazole is reported. The reaction conditions have been successfully employed to acetylate carbohydrate derivatives containing acid-susceptible functional groups. In most of the cases the yields obtained were excellent.
