A facile cascade reaction for the site selective synthesis of 2-cyanochromones is described. By using simple o-hydroxyphenyl enaminones and potassium ferrocyanide trihydrate (K4[Fe(CN)6]3·3H2O) as starting materials and I2/AlCl3 as promoters, the products are furnished via tandem chromone ring formation and C–H cyanation. Treatment of 5-(4-chloro-5H-1,2,3-dithiazol-5-ylidene)-2,2-dimethyl- 1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione with primary arylamines in CH2Cl2 at rt gave 5-[(arylamino)(cyano)methylene]-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-diones in excellent yields.
