Results from study of the photochemistry of N-allylpyridinium and -quinolinium perchlorates demonstrate tht intramolecular electron transfer occurs to generate cation diradical precursors of products containing the tetrahydroindolizidine moiety. Catalytic hydrogenation of the crude photolysates leads to production of perhydroindolizidines in synthetically useful yields.
