Redox transformation of an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde to a carboxylic acid derivative by means of a combination of TMSCN and DBU was investigated. Compositions comprising aromatic ester solvents for use in various aspects of a life cycle of an oil and/or gas well, and related methods, are provided. In some embodiments, the composition includes an emulsion or microemulsion wherein the emulsion or microemulsion comprises an aqueous phase, a surfactant, and a non-aqueous phase. In some embodiments, the non-aqueous phase comprises a solvent blend including a first type of solvent and a second type of solvent, e.g., having a respective weight ratio of about 3:2 to 1:4. In some embodiments, the first type of solvent is a terpene and/or the second type of solvent is an aromatic ester solvent. In some embodiments, compositions are used in methods for treating an oil and/or gas well having a wellbore. In some embodiments, the composition is delivered into the wellbore, reducing residues comprising kerogens, asphaltenes, paraffins, organic scale, or combinations thereof on or near the wellbore.
