    A mixed halogen- and hydrogen-bonding hetero-[2]catenane has been synthesised via an anion templated Grubbs' II-catalysed RCM clipping mechanical bond forming methodology. 1H NMR spectroscopy and fluorescence titration experiments demonstrated the interlocked catenane host to be capable of binding and sensing anions, in particular forming strong associations with acetate and dihydrogen phosphate.

    The synthesis of a novel [2]rotaxane host system containing a bis(triazolium)acridine‐based axle component is reported. 1H NMR anion‐binding titrations reveal that the rotaxane is able to recognise selectively the NO3− anion over a range of more basic oxoanions (AcO−, HCO3− and H2PO4−) in a competitive organic–aqueous solvent mixture.

    A 3,5-bis(triazole)-pyridinium motif is integrated into a catenane structural framework via chloride anion templation. The catenane host system displays a high degree of selectivity for halide anions over dihydrogen phosphate.
