2-Hydroxyhexahelicene has been prepared in good yield and purity via a three-step sequence involving palladium-catalysed Heck coupling and classical oxidative photocyclisation reactions. The two enantiomers of this hexacyclic helicenol have been separated using (S)-(-)-camphanoyl chloride as the chiral resolving agent. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A series of carba- or oxa[5]-, [6]-, [7]-, and -[19]helicene (di)thiols was prepared. The Miyazaki-Newman-Kwart rearrangement of (dimethylcarbamothioyl)oxy (oxa)helicenes in a flow reactor or nucleophilic substitution of dichloro (oxa)helicenes with alkanethiolates were used in the sulfanylation step. Despite the high temperatures employed in this key step, no conformational scrambling was observed
The synthesis of 2-bromo[6]helicene was revised and improved up to 51% yield. Its reactivity was thoroughly investigated, and a library of 17 different carbon, boron, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen and sulfur substituted derivatives was prepared. The racemization barrier for 2-bromo[6]helicene was determined, and the usage of enantiomers in the synthesis of optically pure helicenes was rationalized.
