  The two lower boiling diastereomers of (E)-3-methyl-5-(2,2,3-trimethylcyclopent-3-en-1-yl)pent-4-en-2-ol are novel odorants possessing a very intense creamy, woody, musk, sandalwood odor and are valuable ingredients for use in fragrance composi- tions for its musk and sandalwood-like qualities. The mixture of its diastereomers is more intense than any of the campholenic aldehyde derivatives that have been previously reported.

  [EN] A two-step aldol condensation process is disclosed. a-Campholenic aldehyde (ACA) and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) react in the presence of a base under conditions effective to produce a mixture comprising a high yield of ketol condensation products. Dehydration of the ketols in the presence of an organic sulfonic acid provides unsaturated ketones that are valuable intermediates for fragrance components for synthetic sandalwood products. Compared with the usual one-step, base-catalyzed approach, the two-step process increases the yield of all condensation products and maximizes production of the most valuable ketone isomers.

De l'aldéhyde a-campholénique (ACA) et de la méthyléthylcétone (MEK) réagissent en présence d'une base sous des conditions efficaces pour produire un mélange comportant un rendement élevé de produits de condensation de cétol. Une déshydratation des cétols en présence d'acide sulfonique organique fournit des cétones insaturées qui sont des intermédiaires de valeur pour des composants de parfum pour des produits de bois de santal synthétiques.
