The first synthetic protocol for functionalizing the dihydroazulene (DHA) photoswitch in its seven-membered ring has been developed. This protocol is based on regioselective bromination, followed by regioselective elimination of HBr, and finally a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction with a terminal alkyne.
