precursors containing both an amino and a nitro functionality, azo polymers are prepared on surface via highly efficient nitro‐amino cross‐coupling. Experiments conducted on other substrates and surface orientations reveal that the metal surface has a significant effect on the reaction efficiency. The reaction was further found to proceed from partially oxidized/reduced precursors in dimerization reactions

Here we report the design, synthesis, and 5-HT7 receptor affinity of a set of 1-(3-biphenyl)- and 1-(2-biphenyl)piperazines. The effect on 5-HT7 affinity of various substituents on the second (distal) phenyl ring was analyzed. Several compounds showed 5-HT7 affinities in the nanomolar range and >100-fold selectivity over 5-HT1A and adrenergic alpha(1) receptors. 1-[2-(4-Methoxyphenyl)phenyl]piperazine (9a) showed 5-HT7 agonist properties in a guinea pig ileum assay but blocked 5-HT-mediated cAMP accumulation in 5-HT(7)(-)expressing HeLa cells.

Aryldiazenes with a second, photoactivatable, azide substituent on the aryl ring have been synthesized as active site probes for heme proteins of unknown active site structure. The probes include most of the possible isomers of the phenyl, naphthyl, and biphenyl ring systems. A selection of the probes has been shown to react with the model protein P450(cam) to give (arylazido)iron (FeArN3) complexes, a prerequisite for subsequent affinity labeling of the protein.
