The whole decomposition of the Meisenheimercomplex formed from 2,4,6-trinitroanisole (TNA) and sodium methoxide proceeds in three steps and obeys the first-order kinetics in each step. The rate of the whole decrease of concentration of the complex is given by −d([TNA·CH3ONa]+[TNA·CH3O−])/dt=(k1[H+]+k2[CH3OH])×[TNA·CH3ONa]+(k3[H+]+k4[CH3OH])×[TNA·CH3O−]−k5[CH3O−]×[TNA], where k denotes a rate constant
