    In an attempt to examine the role of the N(I)-alkyl or -aryl moiety of the quinolone antibacterials, several quinone methides such as perinaphthindenone carboxylates (6) were synthesized as 1-carba(sp(2)) analogues of the quinolone structure, and found to have no antibacterial activity. These results together with literature information are interpreted as the necessity of a: least one nitrogen atom at the position of 1, 3, 4a, 6 or 8 in the quinolone-like skeleton for the antibacterial activities.     A method for producing a solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization produces a novel solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization that achieves excellent olefin polymerization activity and activity with respect to hydrogen during polymerization, and can produce an olefin polymer that exhibits a high MFR, high stereoregularity, and excellent rigidity. The method includes a first step that brings a magnesium compound, a tetravalent titanium halide compound, and one or more first internal electron donor compounds selected from specific aromatic dicarboxylic diesters into contact with each other to effect a reaction, followed by washing, a second step that brings a tetravalent titanium halide compound and one or more second internal electron donor compounds into contact with a product obtained by the first step to effect a reaction, followed by washing, and a third step that brings one or more third internal electron donor compounds into contact with a product obtained by the second step to effect a reaction.

    Provided is a solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization comprising an electron-donating compound other than a phthalate, the solid catalyst component being equal in the olefin-polymerizing activity and in the primary physical properties of the resulting polymer such as stereoregularity and molecular weight distribution to those with use of a phthalate as an electron-donating compound. A solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization comprises a magnesium atom, a titanium atom, a halogen atom, an ester compound (A) represented by a general formula (1) and a diester compound (B) represented by a general formula (2), wherein a ratio represented by the following expression: (content (mass %) of ester compound (A)/content (mass %) of diester compound (B)) is 0.05 to 50.

    Disclosed are improved solid, colored wax-based article having longer color shelf-life. The invention comprises a synthetic wax, a colorant, and an effective amount of a compound of the formula (1) 1 having symbols defined in the text. The preferred embodiments of the articles contain (1) that exhibits a UV absorptivity greater than or equal to 70 liters per gram-cm. at a wavelength of less than or equal to 400 nm, as measured in either methanol, toluene or chloroform, using a conventional UV spectrophotometer. The uses for the articles include candles, crayons, fertilizer coatings, rosebush coatings, plant grafting, sealants, sun-cracking protection of rubber and plastic products, paper coating, packaging food products, electrical insulation, waterproofing and cleaning compounds, carbon paper, and precision investment casting.
