Title compounds have been prepared on reaction of thioacetals, orthothioesters and their seleno analogues with diphosphorus tetraiodide (P2I4) or phosphorus triiodide (PI3).

Fully reversible carbon protonation in the hydrolysis of keten selenoacetals

Kinetic solvent isotope effect [k(H3O+)/k(D3O+)<1] and deuterium incorporation (ca. 100%) during acidic hydrolysis of keten selenoacetals establish that these reactions proceed through a pre-equilibrium carbonprotonation step.
