A practical synthesis of formaldehyde, nitroethene, and nitroethane C-glycosylated with a 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-β-d-glucopyranosyl group is described. Synthesis follows the nitromethane route and involves an unusual, intramolecularly catalyzed β-elimination of acetic acid and pH-controlled ozonolysis of nitronate salts.
