  The ligand 2-(2′-thienyl)-8-hydroxyquinoline has been synthesized and the solution stability of some of its metal chelates determined. The finding that log K₁ < log K₂ is attributed to strong steric interaction between the 2-substituent and coordinated water on addition of the first ligand. This interaction results in distortion toward tetrahedral geometry. Previously unexplained data for other 2-substituted 8-hydroxyquinolines have been interpreted in terms of this effect.
