Altered methyl substitution pattern in 11-methyl-9-demethylretinal (1) and 11-methyl-9,13-didemethylretinal (2) resulted in changed polyene conformation, regioselectivity of photoisomerization, uv/vis characteristics and reactivity toward bovine opsin.
