A cobalt complex represented by the following formula (1): L 1 -Co-L 2 (1) wherein L 1 and L 2 represent a unidentate amide ligand of the following formula (A), a bidentate amide ligand of the following formula (B) or a hetero atom-containing ligand of the following formula (C): wherein R 1 and R 2 represent a C 1-6 alkyl group or a tri(C 1-6 alkyl)silyl group, and the wave line represents a binding site to the cobalt atom; wherein R 3 represents a tri(C 1-6 alkyl)silyl group, R 4 and R 5 represent a C 1-4 alkyl group, and X represents a C 1-6 alkylene group; wherein R 6 and R 8 represent a C 1-6 alkyl group, R 7 represents a hydrogen atom or a C 1-4 alkyl group, Y represents an oxygen atom or NR 9 , Z represents an oxygen atom or NR 10 , and R 9 and R 10 independently represent a C 1-6 alkyl group.

    Symmetric N,N′-dialkyl-2-amino-4-imino-pent-2-enes (nacnacRH) can be prepared in high yields in a simple one-pot reaction from acetylacetone and 2 equiv. of amine. Optimized conditions require the azeotropic removal of water, use of a minimum amount of solvent, and of 1 equiv. of acid. Either para-toluenesulfonic acid, hydrochloric acid, or a mixture of both can be employed, with the latter being most advantageous. Symmetric nacnacRH are thus obtained in higher than 95% purity and with 65% yield for R = Me and 80%–95% yields for R = n-Pr, i-Pr, i-Bu, Bn, Cy, and (+)-CH(Me)Ph.

    The present invention relates to a process for preparing a solid catalyst component suitable for producing polyethylene and its copolymers, said process comprising the steps of: (a) contacting a dehydrated support having hydroxyl groups with a magnesium compound having the general formula MgR1R2; (b) contacting the product obtained in step (a) with modifying compounds (A) and/or (B) and/or (C), wherein: (A) is at least one oxygen and/or nitrogen comprising organic compound; (B) is a compound having the general formula R11f(R12O)gSiXh, (C) is a compound having the general formula (R13O)4M, and (c) contacting the product obtained in step (b) with a titanium halide compound having the general formula TiX4, wherein Ti is a titanium atom and X is a halide atom, wherein an organometallic compound is added after step (a) and before step (b). The invention also relates to a solid catalyst component obtainable by said process. The invention further relates to a process for producing polyethylene and its copolymers in the presence of the solid catalyst component and a cocatalyst.
