An optically active silacyclohexane compound of the formula (I)
wherein R is an organic residue, X is -CH2- or -O-; Z is a group which has at least one chiral carbon atom; L1 and L2 are independently H or F, n is 0 or 1;
is a 1,4-cyclohexylene group or a trans-1-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene or trans-4-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene group wherein the silicon atom at the 1 or 4 position, respectively, is substituted by H, F, Cl, or CH3;
is a 1,4-cyclohexylene group, a 1,4-phenylene group or a trans-1-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene or trans-4-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene group wherein the silicon atom at the 1 or 4 position, respectively, is substituted by H, F, Cl or CH3 provided that at least one of
