  Reaction of α-oxoketene dithioacetals with methallyl magnesium chloride followed by acid treatment affords simple and annulated aryl methylthio ethers. The methylthio substituent can be easily removed with Raney Ni, undergo a Ni catalyzed substitution reaction with Grignard reagents, or serve as a directing and protecting group in Friedel-Crafts acylation reactions.
