  The invention provides a compound of the general formula: wherein R₁ is CH₂OH or CHO,     R₂ and R₅ are CH or C,     R₃ and R₄ are CH₂ or CH,     R₆ is CH₃ or CH₂, with the proviso that R₁ is not CHO when R₃ is CH and R₂ is C, R₅ is C, and R₆ is CH₂. Preferably R₁ is CHO, R₃ is CH and R₂ is C, or R₄ is CH and R₅ is C. Also, R₁ can be CH₂OH. The invention also provides a perfume or flavouring mixture, in which an effective amount of the above-­identified compound is present. Furthermore, the invention provides a process for preparing a compound as described above.

  Microorganisms are employed in the production of 2-methyl-­5-isopropyl-hexa-2,5-dien-1-al or 2-methyl-5-isopropyl-­hexa-2,4-dien-1-al from α-pinene or its epoxide. The aldehyde products some of which are novel are of utility in perfume formulations for example in detergent powders and soaps. Microorganisms belonging to the species Pseudomonas fluorescens, and in particular Pseudomonas fluorescens NCIMB 11671 are preferred for effecting the transformations.

  (EN) An active biocatalyst for converting $g(a)-pinene epoxide to terpenic aldehydes useful in perfumery, e.g. formula (I), is produced by growing a microorganism, preferably $i(Pseudomonas fluorescens) NCIB 40043, to late log phase in a medium containing carbohydrate (e.g. glucose) as the carbon source, and adding $g(a)-pinene. The resulting culture comprises active biocatalyst which is brought into contact with $g(a)-pinene epoxide for aldehyde synthesis.(FR) Un biocatalyseur actif permettant de convertir un époxyde d'$g(a)-pinène en aldéhydes terpéniques utiles en parfumerie, par exemple de formule (I), est produit par mise en culture d'un microorganisme, de préférence $i(Pseudomonas fluorescens) NCIB 40043, jusqu'à une phase logarithmique tardive dans un milieu renfermant comme source de carbone de l'hydrate de carbone (par exemple du glucose), et par addition d'$g(a)-pinène.
