The reduction of quinolin-2(1H)-ones to 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines promoted by SmI2/Et3N/H2O is reported for the first time. This reaction involving the reduction of the amides proceeds through C−O bond cleavage. 1,2,3,4-Tetrahydroquinolines were obtained in mild conditions.
