    This invention provides a highly fluorescent material containing a single (i=0) or a series of (i=1, 2, etc.) complex ring systems. This chromophore is particularly useful for the absorption and emission of photons in the visible light wavelength range and near-infrared wavelength range. This chromophore, highly luminescent with photostability, has various applications, such as in wavelength conversion films. Wavelength conversion films have the potential to significantly improve the concentration efficiency of solar light in photovoltaic devices or solar cells.

    N-Aryl-1H-benzotriazolyl-1-methanamines 1, easily accessible from the condensation of anilines with formaldehyde and benzotriazole, undergo Lewis acid assisted reactions with allyl trimethylsilanes to give 4-(trimethylsilyl)methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines 2 in good to high yields.

    Secondary and tertiary amines 6 are conveniently prepared in good yields by reacting organozinc halides with adducts 4, which are derived from the corresponding amines, aldehydes and benzotriazole. The use of organozinc reagents enables the introduction of nitro, cyano or ester functionalities into amine mainframes. This methodology was also used to prepare functionalized amides 8.
