Abstract The 2,3:4,5- ( 8 ) and 2,4:3,5-di- O -isopropylidene ( 10 ) derivatives of d -mannitol have been prepared from 1,6-di- O -benzoyl- d -mannitol and their structures established by 13 C-n.m.r. spectroscopy. The 1,3-dioxane rings in 10 adopt a skew conformation and the sugar carbon chain in 8 is bent around the C-3-C-4 bond, as found by i.r. data and molecular mechanics calculations. Oxidation

(EN) A biodegradable and biocompatible polycarbonate comprising (C3-10) alkylene carbonic acid ester units, each alkylene group being a C3-alkylene group having 1 oxy substituent or a (C4-10) alkylene group having 2-8 oxy substituents, each of the oxy substituents occurring individually as a hydroxyl group or as a derivatized hydroxyl group comprising an ester or an ortho ester or an acetal residue. The polycarbonates may be used as matrices for the sustained release of pharmacologically active compounds, e.g. peptides or proteins, in the form of microparticles or implants.(FR) Polycarbonate biodégradable et biocompatible comportant des motifs d'ester d'acide carbonique d'alkylène (C3-10), chaque groupe alkylène étant un groupe alkylène C3 possédant 1 substituant oxy, ou un groupe alkylène (C4-10) possédant de 2 à 8 substituants oxy. Chaque substituant oxy est présent individuellement sous forme de groupe hydroxyle ou de groupe hydroxyle dérivé comportant un ester ou un ester ortho, ou un reste d'acétal. Ces polycarbonates peuvent servir de matrices permettant la libération prolongée de composés pharmacologiquement actifs, par exemple des peptides ou protéines, sous forme de microparticules ou d'implants.
