Oxidative Radical-mediated Transannulation Reactions Directed Towards Polycycle Constructions

Oxidative radical-mediated transannular cyclisation of the macrocyclic β-ketoester 5 using Mn(OAc)3-Cu(OAc)2, leads to (9; 40%) by way of a 1,5-hydrogen abstraction pathway. In a similar manner 11 produces 12, but the positional isomer 15 undergoes a double transannular cyclisation giving the tricycle 16 albeit in only 8% yield.
