Visual detection: cyclo‐Bis(urea‐3,6‐dichlorocarbazole) (1), the first anionreceptor bearing urea, displays a fluorescence quenching effect with pyrophosphate and fluoride ions. Its deprotonated form (12−) acts as a new fluorescent probe that can selectively detect metal cations (Zn2+ and Cu2+) by means of colorimetric changes.

Cyclo-bis-(urea-3,6-dichlorocarbazole) (1) forms a 1â:â2 complex with CH3CO2â and H2PO4â through hydrogen bonding with the two urea moieties, resulting in fluorescence enhancement via a combined photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and energy transfer mechanism. The binding mechanism involves a conformational change of the two urea receptors to a trans orientation after binding of the first anion, which facilitates the second interaction.
