  The present invention relates to a method of preparing a tocopherol or protected tocopherol with a reduced content of phenolic compound or protected phenolic compound, particularly of (2R,3R)-2,3,4,6,7-pentamethyl-2- (4,8,12-trimethyltridecyl)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-5-ol or (2R,3R)-2,3,4,6,7- pentamethyl-2-(4,8,12-trimethyltridecyl)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-5-yl acetate, comprising the step of contacting tocopherol or protected tocopherol in neat or in the form of a highly concentrated solution with an acid activated bleaching earth. This method is rather efficient in removal of substantial amounts of this impurity.
