  An optically active (+)-isomer of a benzoquinolizine compound of the formula [I], is provided: ##STR1## where X.sub.1 represents a halogen atom, and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 represent lower alkyl groups, a physiologically acceptable salt thereof, or a hydrate of either of the foregoing compounds. The compounds [I]-(+) exhibit an excellent antibacterial activity. Also, the compounds exhibit high solubility in water.
