An apparatus for illuminating a sample comprises a sample plane (205) having an illumination region onto which the sample is arranged, an excitation light unit including at least one light source (201) for generating excitation light, a lens unit having a micro lens array (206) comprising a plurality of lenses arranged in a two dimension arrangement for receiving the excitation light and generating illumination light that is directed towards the illumination region, wherein the lens unit produces homongeneous illumination light to be projected on the illumination region with a high illumination efficiency. The apparatus for illuminating may be comprised in an imaging system, said imaging system further comprising a detector for detecting signals from the sample, thereby acquiring an image, such as a fluorescence image, of the sample, focusing means for focusing the signals on the detector, and a processor for receiving data from the detector.
