A simple, efficient, mild, and regioselective method for oxyiodination of carbonyl compounds has been reported by using NH4I as the source of iodine and Oxone® as an oxidant. Under neutral reaction conditions, aromatic ketones were transformed into the corresponding α-iodo ketones in high yields by the combination of copper(II) oxide and iodine. The reaction mechanism showed that copper(II) oxide played multiple roles through random self-sorting.
