中草药化学是运用现代化学理论和方法研究中草药中的化学成分的科学。这些成分复杂多样,包括糖类、氨基酸、蛋白质、油脂、蜡、酶、色素、维生素、有机酸、鞣质、无机盐、挥发油、生物碱和苷类等。每种中草药通常含有多种化学成分。
其中,具有明显生物活性并能发挥医疗作用的成分称为有效成分,如生物碱、苷类、挥发油及氨基酸等。因此,许多中草药之所以具备医疗效果,主要归因于它们的有效成分,例如黄连中的抗菌消炎小檗碱(黄连素)、麻黄中的平喘麻黄碱和萝芙木中的降压成分利血平等。
除此之外,还有一些在中草药里普遍存在但通常没有生物活性、不起医疗作用的成分,称为“无效成分”,如糖类、蛋白质、色素、树脂及无机盐等。不过,在有效与无效之间并没有绝对界限,有些原来被认为是无效的成分后来因发现其具有生物活性而成为有效成分。
近代科学的发展使得各种精密分离方法趋向快速定量,这使中草药化学成分的研究更加深入。尤其是气相层析和质谱法联用技术的应用,将分离、纯化和鉴定步骤合并,大大提高了结构测定的速度与准确性,并为中草药化学研究提供了广阔前景。
自20世纪50年代以来,由于从民间药材萝芙木中发现了降低血压的生物碱利血平,以及从长春花中发现了抗癌有效成分长春碱,国际科学界重新重视对民间植物药材的研究。尤其是各国竞相从植物药材中筛选出抗癌有效成分,国内如从青蒿中发现速效抗疟药青蒿素,从仙鹤草根芽中分离出具有良好驱绦虫作用的鹤草酚等都证明了中草药化学的进步。
未来,在重大疾病治疗药物研究方面,预计会从植物成分中获得新的突破。在这一基础上,植物组织培养作为一种新学科应运而生,旨在通过人工培养来定向产生大量有利于工业生产的有效成分。例如人参的组织培养粗皂苷含量高达21%。
此外,化学植物分类学的发展也促进了对植物代谢产物(化学成分)分布规律的研究,这将有助于从化学成分的角度研究植物亲缘关系,并为植物成分生物合成途径提供新的研究方法。
